Raising A President: The Story of Jimmy Carter and Rachel Clark
Rachel Clark
Rachel Clark lived in a small tenant house on the farm of Jimmy Carter's family wither husband, Jack Clark. Carter often traveled the well-worn path and spent the night in the Clark home when his parents were out of town. Rachel worked shoulder to shoulder with the young president in the fields. Although farm life was hard work, Rachel and Jimmy would find time to go fishing in the nearby creek. On the walk to the creek, Rachel would tell Jimmy sotries about life's lessons and would share with him her words of wisdom. Joanna Maddox was commissioned by Instructional Specialist Annette Wise of the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site Educational Program to write and perform a first person narrative of Mrs. Rachel Clark. Rachel Clark was a woman who had a profound influence on the 39th President of the United States, President Jimmy Carter. This program is based on the oral histories of Rachel Clark, Jimmy Carter and the books An Hour before Daylight, A Christmas in Plains, and Always a Reckoning written by Jimmy Carter. Joanna is grateful to have had the honor to perform for President Carter in celebration of his 80th birthday on September 29, 2004 in Plains, Georgia.
